Akrasia

The struggle humans have with akrasia is deeply rooted into our minds. It takes self-control to do things that are good in the long run but may seem difficult and annoying in the beginning. Self-control is one of the hardest things to master, evident in a lot of the choices we make on a daily basis. Some examples where akrasia is especially prevalent is in things like maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Exercising and eating healthy is a basic necessity to staying healthy that everyone knows about. However, people struggle with this because they often succumb to the temptation of unhealthy foods and a sedentary lifestyle due to instant gratification. Another example is procrastination. Procrastination is something everyone struggles with, not just students. A lack of self-control is what causes many people to fall into the never-ending hole of procrastination. It is within human nature to want to do the things that give them happiness at that very instant, which involves pushing away the more difficult tasks away for “later”. This ultimately causes things to become less enjoyable in the long run as there will be a buildup of tasks that must be completed. Ultimately, doing the things that you know are good for you requires a substantial amount of discipline and self-control. The reason why it is such a struggle with humans is because discipline and control are hard to master because of our innate desire to do what makes us feel happy and content at that very moment.

  1. I liked your analysis of why people do things like procrastinate, people being short sighted makes a lot of sense and i think you connected it really well.
